Refereeing is a great way to stay active and involved in the game.

England has a long and proud history of producing some of the world's best referees.

Whether you want to referee at local level, remain active in the game following injury or retirement or officiate international competitions, England Rink Hockey is dedicated to making your journey as rewarding as possible.

1. Take the online Rules of the Game test (FREE)

This is a free online training module which provides a basic introduction to the Rules of the Game and interpretations. Successful candidates will receive a certificate identifying they have demonstrated awareness in the Rules of the Game and have the necessary knowledge to become an entry level referee. The online test takes roughly 30 mins.

2. Register with the association

To complete your registration as a new referee, you must be registered with the association. There is no fee if you are not a player.

3. Purchase your Referee essentials

As a new referee you'll need:

  • Referee shirt
  • Cards
  • Book
  • Whistle

4. Join the Referees Facebook Group

Accreditation Levels


  • New referees must successfully complete the online Theory Test to qualify for this grade
  • Required to referee Under 13 & Younger matches.


  • 1 x Referee of Level 4 or above must assess the candidate while refereeing a match and submit the Referee Practical Assessment Form to the CRHR.
  • Required to referee Under 17 & Younger matches.

  • 2 x Referees of Level 4 or above must assess the candidate while refereeing a match/s and submit the Referee Practical Assessment Form to the CRHR. 
  • Required to referee Under 20 & Younger matches.

  • Level 3 referees must complete the Level 4 Theory Test.
  • Required to referee Senior & Younger matches, excluding Premier League

  • 2 x Referees of Level 5 or above must assess the candidate while refereeing a match/s and submit the Referee Practical Assessment Form to the CRHR. 
  • Required to referee Senior & Younger matches, including Premier League.
* May be invited to officiate National League - Senior Division 1 matches to gain experience
